1.1 Background of the Study
Romantic dramas are among the most popular film genres, capturing universal themes of love, relationships, and personal growth. In Nigeria, romantic dramas produced by Nollywood serve as powerful tools for shaping perceptions of love, relationships, and gender roles. These films often depict idealized or dramatized relationship dynamics that influence audience expectations, particularly in culturally vibrant areas like Gwarzo Local Government Area, Kano State (Olatunji & Yusuf, 2023). Studies indicate that media consumption, especially of romantic narratives, plays a role in shaping individuals’ attitudes and beliefs about relationships, often leading to unrealistic or aspirational expectations (Ahmed & Bello, 2024). This study explores the impact of romantic dramas on relationship expectations in Gwarzo, examining how these films shape cultural norms and individual aspirations.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While romantic dramas offer entertainment and emotional resonance, their portrayal of relationships can create unrealistic expectations that may affect interpersonal dynamics. In Gwarzo Local Government Area, where cultural and religious values strongly influence relationships, the narratives in romantic dramas may clash with or reinforce societal norms (Adebayo & Garba, 2023). The lack of critical engagement with how these films shape expectations and their impact on real-life relationships highlights a significant research gap. This study addresses the influence of romantic dramas on relationship expectations in Gwarzo, providing insights into their cultural and social implications.
